Ever have that friend? You know, the one who never called, because it was “Your turn”?
It’s an ancient problem. Sometimes, whether it’s the person, or history, it feels awkward making the first move. We all like to think we’re good at reconciling with history, finding people we miss – especially long lost friends. And we think we’re getting more savvy as tools like Facebook and Twitter become more ubiquitous. But we’re not, are we?
No matter what tools come around, how good we are at connecting, there are always going to be that group of people who we just can’t bring ourselves to connect with first. Former significant others. People we wish were former significant others. Friends we’ve fallen out with. People we miss, but who our friends would give us flack for connecting with.
Icons. Celebrities. Our bosses and, sometimes, co-workers.
There’s always a set of people who you’d love to get back in touch with. But for whatever reason, you just can’t.
I’m here for you. I’ve got that list too – the list of secret friends I wish would find me. In the meantime, I’m on Facebook, I never seem to shut on on Twitter, and I’m digging in to LinkedIn, too. While you’re trying to get back in touch with those people you can’t give yourself permission to connect with – trust me, you’ve got permission to connect with me.
Stop in and say hi. We won’t worry about whose turn it is.
